Day Tripping!

I feel like the Beatles’ song…got a ticket to ride. The wife and I drove over 250 miles [one way] for the second time in a month to bring back a couple of my paintings from a show at the Wayne County Arts Council in Goldsboro, NC. It was a terrific show of artists from all over South & North Carolina. It was billed as a national juried competition, but only one papér maché artist from Washington, D.C. and one oil painter from Smyrna, GA entered work from outside the two original Colonies. I was a bit surprised since this was the 29th Annual National Juried Fine Arts Exhibition. The location may have been the reason. Goldsboro Isn’t exactly the hub of North Carolina, but you can see it from there. Big city Raleigh is near to the north and both Atlantic Beach and New Bern to the south, two excellent places close by the Neuse River and the Atlantic Ocean. 8-)

The Best in Show was an acrylic abstract of various patch quilt patterns called “Pieced together” by Suzan Schuhmacher from Raleigh, NC. The Juror, Wilford W. Scott, head of Adult Programs at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., did a good job considering the variety and volume of entries.

My wife and I both brought our painting kits and spent a week dabbling with watercolor and sightseeing in lovely New Bern. The oppressive heat was the only real negative to the whole trip. It averaged 97 degrees all week! Now that we are back home in the mountains, we don’t seem too worse for wear!
